Survey offers glimpse of face of homelessness in Ottawa

The average homeless person in Ottawa has spent nearly four years living on the streets and in shelters across the city, a new survey reveals.

“To bring that number down we need to focus on those that have been homeless the longest,” said Mike Bulthuis, executive director of the Alliance to End Homelessness Ottawa, which released the results of its survey this week.

Volunteers surveyed 461 homeless people to identify those most in need of immediate housing assistance. This survey was part of a nationwide campaign to house 20,000 people by July 2020.
